Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel took the first visible step toward his season debut on Thursday, when the team assigned him to its G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, for practice.

The assignment, announced through Hornets PR, is a rehab move, not a demotion. Knueppel has yet to play in the 2026-27 season after straining his left hamstring in the offseason, an injury that also cost him the entire preseason. NBA teams routinely send injured players to their G League affiliate for controlled practice reps as they ramp back up, and that is what this is: a sign of progress, not a change of address.

There is still no timetable for his return to the Hornets lineup.
What Charlotte has been missing
Knueppel, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Duke, was one of the best rookies in the league last season. He played 81 games, started 80 of them, and averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists in a little over 31 minutes a night, shooting 47.5 percent from the field, 42.5 percent from three and 86.3 percent from the free-throw line. He finished as runner-up to former Duke teammate Cooper Flagg in the Rookie of the Year race.
The Hornets have started 3-2 without him, coming off a 97-89 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night in which Brandon Miller scored 31 points. The roster around a returning Knueppel looks different from the one he left: the organization traded LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges in the offseason and brought in veterans Naz Reid, Royce O’Neale, Grayson Allen and Dennis Schroder.
That is the context that makes a practice assignment feel bigger than it sounds. Charlotte’s shooting and spacing have been a work in progress early, and Knueppel’s rookie season showed he can stretch a defense from day one.
What happens next
Watch the injury report. A practice assignment is usually followed by a reevaluation and, if it goes well, a return to Hornets practice and then game action. Until the team says otherwise, there is no date to circle — only a step in the right direction, and a fan base already editing the highlight reel.

Assuming all goes well, he will be recalled, practice with the Hornets, and then be cleared to play.
