Overall crime in Charlotte fell 17% in the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in its third-quarter report.
According to the city’s release, violent crime is down 15% and property crime is down 17%. Robberies fell 25%, vehicle thefts 30% and break-ins of cars 26%. Homicides went the other way: 66 through Sept. 30, up from 60 a year ago, a 10% increase. CMPD says its homicide unit has a 78% clearance rate. Reported rapes also rose 7%, from 134 to 143.
In Uptown: The Central Division, which covers the entertainment district, saw overall crime drop 23%, including a 38% decline in violent crime, per CMPD. The department credits stepped-up enforcement in Uptown and South End nightlife areas. Officer-initiated interactions in Uptown nearly tripled, from 9,953 last year to 29,044 this year. CMPD says its Entertainment District Unit made 2,210 traffic stops and 402 arrests and seized 236 guns between January and September.
Curfew pilot: Starting Nov. 1, CMPD will launch a Youth Protection Ordinance pilot with a 10 p.m. curfew for unemancipated minors 17 and younger. There are exceptions for school, work, faith-based events and supervised settings. The department says officers will focus on education, and a curfew violation will never be grounds for a traffic stop.
