Hornets lock up Brandon Miller with a reported 5-year, $209 million extension

With LaMelo Ball traded away, the 23-year-old is expected to carry more of the scoring load, and Charlotte’s starting lineup is banged up early.

Brandon Miller isn’t going anywhere.

The Hornets announced a multiyear contract extension with the 23-year-old wing ahead of the league’s Oct. 19 deadline. NBA.com reported the deal is worth $209 million over five years. The team, following its usual policy, didn’t disclose terms.

Charlotte took Miller with the No. 2 pick in the 2023 draft. According to the team’s announcement, he led the Hornets at 20.2 points per game last season and broke his own franchise record for consecutive games with multiple 3-pointers. He also earned his first Eastern Conference Player of the Week award. NBA.com notes he’s expected to take on an even bigger scoring role after Charlotte traded LaMelo Ball to Minnesota over the summer.

The new-look roster started the season shorthanded. NBA.com reported that Kon Knueppel (left hamstring strain) and Coby White (left calf strain) missed the opener at Brooklyn. Knueppel led the NBA with 273 3-pointers last season, a rookie record. WFAE’s weekly roundup noted the injury-hit Hornets still won their opener.

Charlotte’s first home games are Oct. 31 against Philadelphia and Nov. 2 against Detroit at Spectrum Center.
